This is a powerful Jazz drumless tracks drum practice tool that will quickly improve your drum solo timing and creativity. If you want to really improve your Jazz trading fours and eights on the drums, these tracks will help you get there fast.

With this collection you have 6 Jazz Standard songs complete with intros, heads, last choruses and multiple choruses of drums trading fours and/or eights with the soloist. These drumless Jazz tracks will become an important part of your Jazz drum practice.

What Is Trading Fours And Eights?

Drumming trading fours and eights is when other instrumentalists in the band trade solos with the drummer. The solos are 4 or 8 measures long each.  This usually continues for 1 or 2 choruses of the Jazz tune.

This collection of drumless Jazz tracks includes chords only versions of some classic Jazz standards that you are likely to encounter on the bandstand.  Each song has long trading fours and eights sections to give you lots of opportunity to work on your drum solo creativity and timing.

What’s Included In These Jazz Drumless Tracks?

This Jazz drumless tracks collection came at the request of my YouTube drum lessons channel subscribers. This is a powerful drum practice tool that will quickly improve your drum solo timing and creativity in a real musical context.

Again, this collection has 6 Jazz Standard songs complete with intros, heads, last choruses and multiple choruses of drums trading fours and/or eights with the soloist.

There are 3 mix versions:

  • With bass playing during the drums fours and eights
  • No bass playing during the drums fours and eights (this is the most challenging)
  • Bass only for the entire song

Recommendations For Using These Jazz Drumless Tracks

Start off your drum practice with the bass playing during your drumming fours and eights. When you are comfortable, move to the second mix option and see how your timing is without the bass playing during your fours and eights.  This is a HUGE challenge and a super effective way to quickly improve your internal time.

The third mix option is with bass only.  Use this one so you can solo for entire choruses of a song.  Soloing with a walking bass is one of my favorite ways to solo. The video below demonstrates how to use this practice system in your drum practice.

Here Are Some Tips For Mastering These Jazz Drumless Tracks

The most challenging Jazz drumless tracks in this collection are the ones without bass playing behind the drum solo fours and eights. Here are some tips to help you improve your time and master these tracks.

6 tips for the Trading Fours and Eights drumless tracks:

  1. Count subdivisions out loud without playing drums to check how accurate your timing is. For example count triplets, 1/4 note triplets or 1/4 notes.
  2. Don’t play but sing your solos. This will get you to tap into a greater creative center in your brain and connect you more deeply to the both the music and the pulse of the tempo.
  3. Go back to the tracks with the bass and really listen to see if your soloing is lining up with the bass 1/4’s. You’ll probably discover some places where you are naturally speeding up or slowing down. Fix those and then move on to the bass-less tracks again.
  4. Play only half note or quarter note drum solos during your fours or eights, nothing fancy. This will force you to focus and line up your playing with the quarter note pulse.
  5. All in all, playing with simplicity and focusing on time will serve you well.  After you feel confident playing simply, start to add more notes.
  6. Just keep at it and you will start to feel a more solid pulse during that solo time.
